NEW for 2017 The group has recently created a brand new historical database to provide a collection of photographic, video and audio material that has been given over the years. The aim is to categorise any information previously collected so as future generations can easily search for details about their own family history and previous events . Each event proved to be a great success and helped to spread the word to the local community. The Craft Centre is a charity which has retained the original building and developed the interior into bespoke modular units to host many craft units and businesses. Built 150 years ago in the Victorian era to serve the shipbuilding industry the building remains much the same with many original features. 3rd Dec 2022:In production since 2019 but delayed by the pandemic, the brand new exhibition uses the unique collections of Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives as a lens through which to explore the borough’s history of producing food. For centuries, the East End’s landscape and social and economic history have been influenced by the growing, trading or manufacturing of food. Before 1800 farmland and market gardens characterised the area, but rapid industrialisation saw this pastoral tradition give way to the factories and warehouses producing food for mass consumption nationwide and globally. The Island History Trust Collection features significantly in this exhibition and the Friends of Island History Trust volunteers will be taking part in a day of talks at Bancroft Road on Saturday 3rd December.
